Happy Birthday America!

There was a prophecy delivered by the prophet Malachi before the appearing of John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan 400 years later. In the prophecy he warned of something that all citizens of any great nation should heed. In it the prophet stated: Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. And he shall turn and reconcile the hearts of the [estranged] fathers to the [ungodly] children, and the hearts of the [rebellious] children to [the piety of] their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance of the ungodly], lest I come and smite the land with a curse and a ban of utter destruction. (Malachi 4:5-6)

But now the question must be asked who are our prophets, and America’s Father’s? I could make a long list but will only briefly allude to a few. One of those father’s was Noah Webster, known as the Father of American Scholarship and Education. It is estimated that there were over 100 million copies of his Blue Back Speller in use in the 1800’s. This textbook is credited for teaching children how to read, spell, and pronounce words for 100 years. He wrote the first American dictionary, mastering over 25 languages to prepare himself for the task. What most fail to recognize is that Noah Webster was a devout, born-again believer. Dr. Del Tackett wrote: “When I was in Washington, studying the founders on the side, I was deeply impressed with their wisdom and intellect. Let’s begin with one of Noah’s statements:” In my view, the Christian Religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government, ought to be instructed…no truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian Religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people. “Note that Noah is reconfirming what we have seen before in terms of the foundations. But he is also expressing another common view, one that is quite logical: if Christianity is a vital foundation to freedom, then children must be instructed in that foundation.”

Another one of America’s spiritual fathers was John Adams (1735–1826). He was a Founding Father, the first Vice President (1789–1797), and the second President of the United States (1797–1801). A brilliant legal mind from Massachusetts, he championed American independence, helped negotiate peace with Britain, and established the navy. He once stated: Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. His second cousin, Samuel Adams (1722–1803) was a Founding Father of the United States, a key leader of the American Revolution, and an instrumental political philosopher. A master organizer and propagandist, he founded the Sons of Liberty, coordinated the Boston Tea Party, signed the Declaration of Independence, and later served as Governor of Massachusetts. Samuel Adams added to his second cousins remarks by stating: Religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness.

Dr. Tackett adds another founding father, Benjamin Rush. Dr. Tackett writes: “Dr. Rush was a brilliant intellectual, completing college at the age of 14 and then studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He was a fierce abolitionist, advocated for women’s education, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Here is his perspective: The only foundation for…a republic is to be laid in Religion.  Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments. Here he begins with reiterating the foundations we have seen before. Liberty can only come if the people are virtuous, moral. But their virtue and morality must come from a foundation of religion. What does he mean when he uses the word religion? Here is his statement:…Christianity is the only true and perfect religion; and that in proportion as mankind adopt its principles and obey its precepts they will be wise and happy.

One overlooked spiritual father, connected to the fight of abolition in America, was Frederick Douglas. Myles Werntz, of Christianity Today wrote: In 1852, Frederick Douglass was invited to deliver a speech at the annual Independence Day celebration in Rochester, New York. After escaping from slavery some 14 years earlier, Douglass became an abolitionist and a sought-after speaker in the United States and abroad. As a Christian, Douglass filled his speeches with biblical allusions and often directly addressed churches. He spoke often of the contradiction between the faith Christians of his day professed and their acceptance of slavery, naming the distance between the words of Jesus and the prejudice and other moral failures of the American church. The Smithsonian Magazine celebrated Douglas in an article titled: A Nation’s Story: “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”  In it the article stated: On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration and asked, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Douglass was a powerful orator, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition. His speech, given at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was held at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York. It was a scathing speech in which Douglass stated, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine, You may rejoice, I must mourn.” In his speech, Douglass acknowledged the Founding Fathers of America, the architects of the Declaration of Independence, for their commitment to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness:” After expounding on the honor due to the contributions of our founding fathers Douglas noted with sadness: But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”

Douglas’ speech reminds believers everywhere that the “City on a Hill” birthed by our Puritan Fathers in 1630, was created simply because of the freedom and liberty afforded through the stripes of Christ. It is by His Blood that we gained our freedom from slavery to sin and through it was birthed our great nation. We must never forget that regardless of those historical detractors who hate and despise all this country holds dear we should never swerve from those Christian values that believed the “City of Christ” could be established on the “Hill” of North America. We must always be conscious that while we celebrate our emancipation and deliverance from slavery to sin there are still others who do not enjoy our freedom. May God, by HIs Grace and the Power of His Spirit, shed abroad the Love of Jesus in our hearts to such a degree that we cease remaining silent – joyfully extolling to all the freedom, peace and forgiveness we now enjoy.

Freedom From Religion

The Prophet Ezekiel provides a stern warning for all who claim to be spiritual shepherds of God’s people prophesying: And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them, even to the [spiritual] shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the [spiritual] shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the sheep? You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you kill the fatlings, but you do not feed the sheep. The diseased and weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the hurt and crippled you have not bandaged, those gone astray you have not brought back, the lost you have not sought to find, but with force and hardhearted harshness you have ruled them. And they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild beasts of the field. My sheep wandered through all the mountains and upon every high hill; yes, My sheep were scattered upon all the face of the earth and no one searched or sought for them. Ezekiel 34:1-6 AMPC

The Bill of Rights of these Untied States guarantees the free exercise of religion – but it does not guarantee the freedom from religion. Religion without a relationship with Jesus is what crucified Him in the first place (and still does). Religion is self-centered, and self-focused, on the self-effort of “do-it-yourself” adherents. Religion is rutted routines without Life or Substance. Religion puffs up its adherents with pride having knowledge void of experience. Religion generously measures its own performance while stingily judging the efforts of others considered inferior and lacking. Religion, according to Genesis 3:19, is plowing the fields for your own bread while eating it in the sweat of the curse of the knowledge of good….AND evil.

Christmas reminds us of the Good News declared to the first shepherds, and echoed in Ezekiels’ prophecy: Therefore will I rescue My flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 And I will raise up over them one Shepherd and He shall feed them, even My Servant David; He shall feed them and He shall be their Shepherd. 24 And I the Lord will be their God and My Servant David a Prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it. 25 And I will confirm with them a covenant of peace….Ezekiel 34:22-25

Thy Kingdom Come (and Keep Coming)!

Luke 2:1-2 In those days it occurred that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole Roman empire should be registered. This was the first enrollment, and it was made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. AMPC

This mandatory enrollment by the hostile government of Rome was not received well by the citizens of Israel. Regarding the response of the people F.F. Bruce wrote: Quirinius, a Roman senator (was) dispatched by Caesar to be governor of the nation, and to make an assessment of their property…. Although the Jews were at first shocked…So those who were convinced… declared…the value of their property. Some rebelled,…under the leadership of Judas the Galilean, saying that such a Roman census was downright slavery. It was this uprising that gave birth to the Zealot party (described in Acts 5:37)

Prior to the 2024 Presidential Election Elon Musk promoted the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States which states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. According to the Constitution these were “inalienable” rights. But some were afraid it did not go far enough to protect individual rights so they drafted our Bill of Rights.

When Jesus was born America did not exist, and the inalienable rights addressed in our Constitution only existed for the rich and powerful. It was into this hostile political atmosphere a Heavenly Amendment was made: And in that vicinity there were shepherds living [out under the open sky] in the field, watching [in shifts] over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone all about them, and they were terribly frightened.10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people.11 For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord! 12 And this will be a sign for you [by which you will recognize Him]: you will find [after searching] a Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.13 Then suddenly there appeared with the angel an army of the troops of heaven (a heavenly knighthood), praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest [heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor]. Luke 2:8-14 AMPC

Have you received His Amendment to your life?

The Wind Blows Where It Wishes

John 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Exodus 1:8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

Regarding the manifestations of the Spirit, from Genesis to our present age, we are in many ways like the new king over Egypt who did not know Joseph. Often we behave as children scooping up the oceans sand in a pail hoping to bring an ocean home, or as Bobby Conner once stated, “We are too familiar with an unfamiliar God” – (“God in a box” theology void of experiential reality). We become champions of our intelligence missing the glaring fact that it was this very “mountain” that Jesus chose to drive His Cross through.

Jeff Oliver, in Pentecost To The Present, Book One: Early Prophetic and Spiritual Gifts Movements states: So this question begs an answer: If these supernatural gifts never left the Church and if the Holy Spirit has been active throughout Church history, working through each generation to build Christ’s Church since the day of Pentecost, why haven’t we heard more about such activity?

Certainly, nothing in the Gospels or Acts indicated that signs and wonders would cease or that the Spirit of God would become passive or dormant. Indeed, the very notion of an inactive Holy Spirit contradicts everything the Bible teaches about His nature and character. This is like saying the wind hasn’t blown in over two thousand years!….The reasons for the relative historical silence are many, but a few are cited below:

  1. Sometimes historical records can be sketchy at best. Objects close in proximity – whether of space or time – are more easily discerned than objects far off….Today modern archaeology and the Information Age are rewriting history every day. Have you ever heard the term “Dark Ages”? This term was once used to describe a period of alleged intellectual and cultural darkness between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Renaissance (AD 500 – 1300), but starting in the nineteenth century an increased recognition of the accomplishments of that period led to a more restrictive use of the term. By the twentieth century, the term had been further narrowed until most modern scholars finally stopped using it altogether, finding the term false and misleading. In other words, there never really was a “Dark Ages.”
  2. It is not possible to record every miracle or event as it occurs, especially in times of spiritual fervor. Journalists are familiar with the inverted pyramid. Essentially, all important information is placed at the top of a story to capture readers’ interest while all remaining information, for the sake of time and space, is reported in descending order of importance. Likewise when the Spirit of God moved throughout history, it was not always practical or even possible to record every event as it happened.
  3. Until the twentieth century, many of the firsthand participants in spiritual revivals were largely illiterate….Even most early accounts of the twentieth-century Pentecostal movement were written by non-Pentecostals since many early Pentecostals could neither read nor write. Similarly, most information coming from Early and Middle Ages came from church fathers who were among the relatively few who could read and write….Likewise, many early accounts of the Spirit’s activities in the Church are secondhand and often from hostile witnesses. Consider this expose’ written about an historical Christian sect from a previous century: Devotees of the weird doctrine practice the most fanatical rites, preach the wildest theories and work themselves into a state of mad excitement in their peculiar zeal….Night is made hideous in the neighborhood by the howling of worshippers, who spend hours swaying back and forth in a nerve-racking attitude of prayer and supplication. They claim to have the gift of tongues and to be able to comprehend the babel. – This excerpt was printed in the Los Angeles Times on April 18, 1906, regarding a “tumble-down shack on Azusa Street” – essentially, the foundation of modern Pentecostalism.
  4. It is simply human nature to take what we hear at face value, relying on conventional wisdom and prevailing thought for correctness. Few follow the Berean practice of searching the Scriptures daily to verify whether what is said is so….Horace Bushnell, a graduate of Yale during America’s Second Great Awakening, in one of the earliest known works on Continuationism (1858), provided an impetus for this series: It is very commonly assumed and has been since the days of Chrysostom, that miracles and all similar externalities of divine power have been discontinued….The Christian world has been gravitating, visibly, more and more, toward this vanishing point of faith, for whole centuries, and especially since the modern era of science began to shape the thoughts of men by only scientific methods. Religion has fallen into the domain of the mere understanding, and so it has become a kind of wisdom not to believe much, therefore to expect little.
